Unexpected- Monday Moments

Filed under: Monday Moments — by Alison @ 2:28 pm

We waited to tell my daughter about the new baby until we were sure. We thought it would be better to have a picture to show her, make it more real. She loves babies, loves playing with her dolls and taking care of them. I knew she’d be excited.

After the ultrasound, and hearing a heartbeat, we felt it was the right time. We picked her up from daycare and once we were home sat her down on the couch. I had her on my lap. Then with my voice cracking I told her “You’re going to be a big sister, we’re having another baby”.

She burst into tears, stunning us both. We comforted her and between sobs she explained “I don’t want to be a big sister, I want to be the mommy”.

Unexpected then, but now when she tries to tell him what to do or rushes to be the first to comfort him I really shouldn’t be surprised.

  1. That’s so sweet! Big sister doesn’t mean much, I guess, to someone who has never been one. But she knew what a mommy was, clearly. That’s really neat that she wanted to be one ๐Ÿ™‚

    • We spent some time over the next few months trying to sell her on the big sister gig. Still not sure she believes us, even after 19 months ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. So sweet! With DS1 felt the same about DS2 – I think he sees him more as an interloper than a beloved ‘son’ ๐Ÿ˜‰
