Deep end- Monday Moments

Filed under: Monday Moments — by Alison @ 10:18 pm

Instructor T felt that the class was ready, and as a reward they all got to line up on the pool deck in their life jackets and head to the slide in the big pool. Four little girls who listened to him intently and were all able to swim laps across the little pool without assistance. They each went down the slide, and then swam over to the side. I watched from my chair near the little pool. Happy with my vantage point, comfortable with the life jackets.

The next week, they were presented with an option: slide or diving board. They were split evenly. My daughter decided to try the diving board. Instructor T got in the water and they jumped to him, with their life jackets on. I had to shift in my chair to see this week, but still confident.

The second last week of class, and the girls hop out of the pool and line up behind Instructor T. But this time they bypass the rack of life jackets. I sit up a bit straighter as they head to the slide. Instructor T holds a pool noodle that the girls grab as they go down the slide. My daughter isn’t the first to go down, so I relax back in my chair. She doesn’t go down the slide at all. Instead her and a buddy march to the diving board. Instructor T moves towards the diving board and sits on the edge of the pool. I sit up again. He doesn’t get in the water. My daughter walks along the diving board. I’m standing now, to get a better view I tell myself. She jumps off the board toward the side. I take a half step, still holding my infant son, but ready to react if needed. She surfaces, smiling, and swims over to the side while Instructor T helps her out. I let out a huge sigh of relief and a cheer.

  3. I’m just glad she finds the big pool too cold.
