We remember

Filed under: Uncategorized — by Alison @ 1:44 pm

I attended the Rememberance Day ceremony at my daughter’s school. It was a simple yet moving ceremony. The Grade One students read and the Kindergarten class was also involved. There was a nice nod to parents in the school who served in Afghanistan. It was great to see them home safe. The one thing lacking for me, was a reading of In Flanders Fields by Lieutantant Colonel John McCrae.

So for anyone else who missed it:

In Flanders Fields by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

  1. I get shivers just reading the words. And I did miss it – so thanks.
