Birthday high

I love birthdays. I think it’s important to make the birthday person feel special. So at our house that starts with a morning parade of presents. We go into the bedroom with presents and a special birthday breakfast. I also sing ‘Happy Birthday’ really loudly.

Cakes are a crucial part of birthdays. The birthday person gets to pick their cake, and now with E at school, the school treat. One of our most treasured cookbooks is The Australian Women’s Weekly Birthday Cake Book. It’s a bit dated, with lovely ideas for girls such as sewing kits and cradles. But we love the candy castle and the animal designs. This year I attempted the dump truck. It didn’t turn out quite like the picture but I was pleased.

We usually have a family party, with both sides of the family, and a party with friends. It usually makes for a busy weekend, but enjoyable.

Today we celebrated my son’s birthday. The friend’s party was in the morning. He knows a lot of similar aged kids. Two sets of twins makes for a fun time. Planning a party for two year-olds was challenging. I didn’t want to schedule the whole party, but I also wanted to make sure the kids had something to do. We decided on a construction theme, and had houses, cars and buildings to decorate for our roadway. Stickers, crayons and markers made for a lot of fun, and a lot of tidying up.

The family party was less messy in some regards, but not any quieter. My little guy was thrilled with his new trucks and playing with his cousins.

All in all, a busy but successful day.
