Challenge for the week

Filed under: Move — by Alison @ 11:34 pm

There’s less than 7 weeks before we move. While I’m not responsible for packing up everything here, I will be responsible for unpacking and putting things away in Seattle. And the thought of that is making me more than a little nervous. Our current house has a lot of storage space, and we use it. Prepping the house for sale meant packing things away. This was generally done with the focus on speed, so we put a lot of things on boxes or bags that we really should have gotten rid of. And there are still the boxes that weren’t unpacked from our last move. The new house has a different layout, and not as much space to keep useless boxes. So I need to do some sorting and purging.

My challenge for the week, is to sort through at least one bag or box a day. Any help would be appreciated!

  1. One box a day sounds reasonable! You can do it!

  2. As a professional organizer I help clients all the time prepare for moves and unpack from moves. You can ABSOLUTELY go through one box a day. I think you could do more actually.

Try this: set a timer for 7 minutes. Go through the box quickly and make split second decisions on what to keep, give away/donate and what to throw away. Have a donate box, a garbage bag and a give away box (maybe it is for a friend or relative). As you go through the box, place each item where it belongs.

Keep those ‘maybe’ items beside the ‘keep’ items.

Once you are done this rapid-fire decision making, reset the timer to 13 minutes. Take time to review what you have ‘kept’ and ‘maybes’ . A second pass-by may see you getting rid of more things.

In 20 minutes, you have gone through one box. Like I said…you can do more. Now, on to the next box…

Let me know if this technique helps you.

    • Thank you for these tips Margarita. I will try this tomorrow and let you know how it goes.
