Fit skate or bag skate

Filed under: Derby,Learning,Weight loss — by Alison @ 4:57 pm

My calves are sore and I am tired. Last night was my second Fit Skate as part of the Rat City Recreational League. It’s a 90-minute skating class without derby drills. So really I’m paying for a bag skate. Side note, I always thought it was a bag skate, because you’d want to throw up in your hockey bag once practice was over.

Turns out, it’s a lot of fun. Both weeks have been different, because of the different instructors. Last night, we did a lot of skating in the reverse direction and the week before there had been more interval agility drills. I like just flat-out skating and building my endurance will pay off during scrimmages.

A couple of things I want to improve on, turning around (transitions) at higher speeds and keeping my line in the reverse direction. I find that when I cross over going clockwise, I tend to go wide around the corner and lose speed. I know that my speed skate blades were angled for the counter-clockwise direction but I’m not sure I can use that excuse with my roller skates.I also need to stretch after the session. It’s late at night, so we’re in a rush to get out of the facility, but I either need to stop the cool-down earlier and stretch or make sure to stretch when I get home. I’m not all that flexible on a good day, and feeling stiff and sore isn’t great.

Hopefully, all this extra skating will help me when try-outs roll around.
